Sony Disliked Survival RPG Tokyo Jungle When It Was First Shown

Tokyo Jungle is a survival role-playing game that invites gamers to inhabit the body of animals who survive in an urban environment after an apocalypse wipes out all the humans and it seems that publisher Sony initially reacted badly to the concept.

Yohei Kataoka, the game director working on Tokyo Jungle, argues, “It was bad. Initially. It wasn’t received so well at the very beginning.”

“I think there weren’t so many people that thought this game would sell just based on the concept, but as the game started to take form there was good user reaction and feedback,” he adds.

He says that Shuhei Yoshida, the leader of the Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studio, wanted to see changes made to the game.

Kataoka added, “he explained there was a catchiness to the concept but the gameplay itself wasn’t at the same level. So we had to take some time to bring that up to the same level. That’s why it took some time from Tokyo Game Show 2010 for these adjustments to take place.”

It seems that a solid positive reaction from potential European players was the main reason that Tokyo Jungle got the resources needed to complete its development cycle.

In Tokyo Jungle gamers need to control an animal and make sure that he thrives by getting him food, staying away from potential enemies and marking territory.

As the game progresses, the player will be able to mate and then play as his own offspring.

Tokyo Jungle is already available in Japan and gamers in Europe and North America will be able to buy and download it from the PlayStation Network.

A patch will be delivered in the near future in order to allow players to use the Remote Play of the PlayStation Vita handheld for the game.
