GlobalFoundries to Conquer 80% of the Chinese Tablet CPU Market

The ever declining tablet prices are making life in this sector very hard for various technology companies. Rockchip is populating over 80% of the tablets manufactured in China, but the unit price is going down on a steep slope so measures had to be taken.

Rockchip manufactures ARM SoCs that are targeting tablets and various similar applications such as SmartTVs and also takes care of all the necessary software pack that comes with the platform.

The company views Taiwanese SoC developer MediaTek as its main competitor and wants to ensure that GlobalFoundries will give it a clear and definite edge over the Taipei giant.

Rockchip’s representatives have just received some 28nm wafers from the Dresden GlobalFoundries FAB in a meeting in London.

MediaTek is still using TSMC’s 40nm manufacturing process and there are very little chances that its compatriot foundry will give it access to the 28nm production lines in the detriment of giants such as AMD or Nvidia.

This is a surprising move from Rockchip and a huge business opportunity for GlobalFoundries.

The ex-AMD foundry and its current owner ATIC have been loosing money for years now.

The company has been receiving huge amounts of investments from ATIC and everybody was waiting for a serious deal that will turn it to profit again.

We don’t know if this collaboration with Rockchip is enough to get GlobalFoundries back to profitability, but it’s a serious step in the right direction.

As we said, Rockchip now powers almost 80% of the tablets manufactured in China.

While this may seem impressive on a national scale, we must also mention that it is just as impressive on an international level as around 80% of all tablets manufactured in China are exported.

Rockchip powers tablets manufactured under well-known brands such as Samsung, Philips, Sony, Toshiba and Archos and therefore GlobalFoundries will likely get a good piece of all that action.
