Shipments may not be expected to begin until later next month (October 2012), but that doesn't mean that Intel and its partners can't formally reveal their tablets before that time.
Intel's Clover Trail central processing unit, the newest addition to the Atom Z series (Z2760), is a dual-core CPU with Hyper-threading (4 threads) and a clock speed of 1.8 GHz.
The feature set goes further though. The 32nm chip has an integrated graphics processor with 533 MHz speed, hardware acceleration for 1080p Full HD video, an integrated memory controller (up to 2GB at LPDDR2 800 MT/s data rates) and an embedded multimedia card 4.41.
Supported features include Microsoft Connected Standby, GPIOs, USB 2.0, Secure Boost, GPS, accelerometer / compass, hardware sensor hub and integrated ISP support for a primary camera (8 megapixels max) and a secondary camera (up to 2.1 megapixels).
All things considered, the star of the launch event held today is this very processor, not the tablets, as those will only ship in October.
Speaking of which, Acer, ASUS, Dell, Fujitsu, HP, Lenovo, LG Electronics, Samsung and ZTE are the ones with Windows 8, not RT, slates on standby. Stick around as we take a look at them one at a time.
"This is just the beginning of Intel's effort in the tablet market, and our goal is to deliver products that fit the spectrum of evolving needs of both consumers and business users without compromising on compatibility, experience or battery life," said Erik Reid, general manager, application processor platforms for Intel's Mobile and Communications Group.
"When people or corporations buy a device with Intel Inside, they're getting the best of Windows 8 features with a computing experience that just works."
