Sony Readies Portable Batteries for Phones and Tablets

Whether it was planned or not, Sony has stolen the spotlight that Mophie managed to secure yesterday (September 24, 2012). The IT company has brought forth a range of portable external batteries.

Smartphones and tablets have long battery lifespans nowadays, and the latter can go particularly long without a recharge if they have a dock to settle in.

Lugging around backpacks full of chargers and docks defeats the purpose of those items being “portable”.

Knowing this, Sony has prepared a collection of external batteries that are the same size as smartphones and carry between 3500 mAh and 7000 mAh of energy.

Sony was able to make its batteries so small (2.8 x 5.1 inches / 71 x 130 mm for the 7000 mAh) because of the “laminate” technology, which laminates all battery components together, cutting down on materials and weight in the process.

To gain some perspective, Apple's iPhone 5 has a 1,440 mAh battery, and Samsung's Galaxy S3 comes with a 2100 mAh battery.

That said, a phone is recharged in about 130 minutes via USB, and even the weakest battery models should be left with some juice afterwards.

When the charge does deplete, though, it can be restored through either a 4-hour period of being connected to a wall power socket, or by being linked for 8 hours to a PC's USB port.

Sony will begin shipping the batteries on October 13, 2012, but only in Japan. The prices will range from 2,300 Yen ($30 / 23 Euro) to 7,000 Yen ($90 / 70 Euro). The rest of the world will gain access to the 3000-7000 mAh batteries on November 14.

On a related note, Sony intends to bring forth a lower-end model, one with a cylindrical shape and a capacity of 2000 mAh. We don't know how large it will be, but our best guess is as much as a flash drive unit.
