Sonic Creator Wants More Freedom for Mario, Zelda, Metal Gear Creators

The original creator of Sonic has revealed that he is pleased to have the freedom to pursue his own game ideas rather than work on more titles that use the SEGA owned character.

Yuji Naka, who is currently working on mobile phone titles, told Polygon that, “One of the reasons I left Sega was, if I stayed there, I would have had to just make Sonic games. Right now I don’t have to make Sonic anymore, so I’m enjoying that freedom a lot.”

According to the developer, freedom to create the games he is interested in is worth more to him than the position he had with SEGA when he was working on Sonic.

He added, “Like with Nintendo: Miyamoto has been making Mario games. He’s under that too. He has to keep on making Mario games. Aonuma has to keep making Zelda games. Kojima has to make Metal Gear games.”

Naka would like to see the trio of well-known developers tackle other projects that focus more on innovation than on simply iterating on already established characters and gameplay mechanics.

The developer believes that the gaming industry is suffering because the most important developers focus just on a small number of big franchises, while the movie industry is flourishing because movie directors have more freedom when choosing projects.

Yuji Naka worked on a video game called Rodea and the Sky Soldier, a title that was set to arrive on the Nintendo 3DS handheld and the Wii, but no detail on the project has been offered for some time.

At the moment, SEGA seems to have given up on trying to create entirely new games based around Sonic and has mined the rich past of the characters in order to re-release content that players are already familiar with.

Earlier during 2012, Shigeru Miyamoto has suggested that he might have a smaller role in game development so that he can focus on working with younger game creators.
