JetBlue to Roll Out Free In-Flight WiFi Next Year

Free WiFi is fast turning from a perk to a default feature in more and more places. In-flight WiFi in particular is a heaven-sent, but it's been rather expensive in the few cases where it's actually available.

Some airlines offer free WiFi, sometimes part of a promotion as is the case with Virgin Airlines and Google, but it's generally been higher-end airlines that do this.

Now though, budget airline JetBlue plans to offer in-flight WiFi on some of its US flights and will do it for free, at least at first.

JetBlue is also going for quality, ditching the likes of Gogo, which offer internet services to airlines via ground stations, and choosing satellite internet provider ViaSat instead.

The airline believes this choice will mean faster internet for users, in its tests the connection was significantly faster than that of competitors.

The option is rolling out starting next year and will be free at first, up until at least 30 planes are equipped with the option. After that, basic email and browsing will remain free, but bigger usage will cost.
