Google Earth Used to Spot Marijuana Grows, but Not Why You'd Think

Google Maps and Google Earth made it possible for anyone to scour the Earth, quite literally albeit virtually, in search of just about anything. It didn't take long for such a tool to be used by law enforcement agencies around the world, for things like discovering people who built pools without a permit to marijuana plantations.

That last one makes sense, these plantations are hard to spot from the ground and their owners take great pains to find remote locations and camouflage the area. But they're so easy to spot from the air it's ridiculous.

More recently though, the US Department of Fish and Game has been using Google Earth to look for marijuana grows, but not for the reasons you'd expect.

Marijuana is somewhat legal in California and there are legal "farms." However, this new gold rush is causing problems for the local wildlife, as these grows use up precious water supplies, to the point where streams are drying up and they are also releasing herbicides, pesticides into the environment.
