EndWeekGame: September 7

Andrei Dumitrescu: My colleague is on a long holiday, so this week I will tell you about the games I wish I were playing this weekend, in addition to talking about the games I will be able to enjoy.

As those who read this column regularly know, I have a slight obsession with grand strategy titles and this week it shall manifest in yet another complex, deep battle with the Red Hordes of Communist Russia as the mighty American liberators.

I already boosted my strength enough to defeat the Japanese in the Home Isles, with their forces now facing annihilation on the Chinese mainland, while at the same time defeating the Germans in France.

Unfortunately, I have already committed to fighting the Russians at the same time and that’s a huge drain on my resources, especially when it comes to the fighting in the North.

The good news is that the Russian Bear lacks the naval assets to strike at my own territory, but that also means that they have invested heavily in infantry and tanks and are able to easily check all my invasion attempts.

When World War II “what if” scenarios become too much for me, I plan to fire up a little Football Manager 2012 in honor of the new season of the Premier League, taking another stab at managing Liverpool.

But what I really want for the weekend is a solid strategy video game based on the A Song of Fire and Ice books by R.R. Martin to complement the time I spend reading the books.

Cyanide attempted to create one, but their design decisions really don’t do the source material justice and it seems that no other team will touch the universe, fearing its complexity.

I would even settle for a simple port of the excellent Game of Thrones board game from Fantasy Flight which manages to quickly pair me up with human players but, alas, that’s also missing.
