BlackBerry 10 Screenshots and Dev Alpha B Handset at Blackberry Jam Americas

RIM might have lost a lot of market share lately, but the company appears set to make a strong comeback with the forthcoming BlackBerry 10 operating system.

The platform is set to hit the market only in the first quarter of the next year, and the Canadian handset vendor is currently applying the final touches to it.

At the Blackberry Jam Americas conference, Research In Motion provided some more info on the platform, and also announced the availability of a new developer handset, the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha B.

The new phone comes with bumped-up specifications, featuring a 4.2-inch touchscreen display that can deliver a 1280 x 768 pixel resolution, along with 1GB of RAM and 16GB of internal memory.

The handset runs under the BlackBerry OS version 10.0.9 Bundle 388 that was already announced as currently available for the first developer smartphone as well.

The platform comes with a multi-paned homescreen, with up to 8 panes that in fact provide users with thumbnails of running applications. Developers can even set them to show some content from the software.

The platform also comes with gestures, offers fast access to features and applications, including the BlackBerry Hub (by dragging up then right), where users will find e-mail, BBM, Facebook, Twitter, and the like.

The menu options for apps can be accessed by swiping down from the top of the screen, while opened apps can be accessed swiping up from the bottom.

The operating system will also arrive on devices with a BlackBerry Balance feature, so that users can separate their personal and work lives.

Although things are already looking good, RIM still has a lot of work to do to make the BlackBerry 10 OS ready. Apparently, at least three more months will pass before the platform is released to manufacturing.

In the meantime, you can have a look at some screenshots with the platform, available courtesy of BlackBerryCool. A more detailed view of the platform can be found at The Verge.
