Worlds Cheapest Jelly Bean Tablet Gets Launched in India for $125 USD (100 EUR)

We reported in early July that Indian company Karbonn planned to launch a tablet and a smartphone, both powered by Google’s latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Karbonn mentioned that both devices were expected to hit shelves sometime in September. The Jelly Bean tablet should have been called Karbonn ST4 and was said to be equipped with a large 9.7-inch capacitive touchscreen display with Corning Gorilla Glass coating.

The Indian company also announced in early July the immediate availability of an ICS-based 7-inch tablet known as Smart Tab 1.

However, it appears that Karbonn changed its mind and decided to release the Smart Tab 1 with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system onboard.

The Karbonn Smart Tab 1 tablet will be available for purchase via the manufacturer’s online store, as well as multiple online portals and retailers across the country, including Walmart and Reliance Digital.

The good news is that the slate is currently priced at Rs 6,999 ($125 USD or 100 EUR) outright, which makes it the world’s cheapest tablet to run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean platform.

Hardware-wise, the Smart Tab 1 is equipped with MIPS-Based JZ4770 SoC from Ingenic, which embeds a 1.2 GHz single-core processor. There’s also a 2-megpixel rear camera, 3G support, microSD card slot for memory expansion (up to 32GB).

Customers who purchased an earlier version of the tablet with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich platform out of the box will receive an upgrade to Jelly Bean soon.

With its unmatched combination of high performance and ultra-low power consumption, the MIPS-Based Ingenic SoC was a natural choice for our new tablet. Long battery life, leading-edge features and a wealth of local content make the Karbonn Smart Tab 1 tablet an ideal product for the Indian market. Building on our success with mobile handsets in India, Karbonn is pleased to be a leader in bringing an Android 4.1 tablet to market, and the first company in the world to offer an Android 4.1 tablet at such an affordable price point,” said Pradeep Jain, managing director, Karbonn Mobiles.
