MegaUpload's Kim Dotcom Gets $4.84 Million from the Court to Pay Lawyers

MegaUpload's Kim Dotcom spent yesterday boasting about an upcoming Mega 2.0 relaunch/revamp. There aren't that many details, but Dotcom is asking developers to get involved.

Of course, starting a new business, or remaking an old one, requires money, quite a lot of it, and money is the one thing that Dotcom is lacking at the moment.

Not anymore though, the court just authorized the release of a chunk of his money which have been frozen in bank accounts since back in January.

That money isn't going towards the new MegaUpload though since Dotcom has more pressing issues, like paying his lawyers who have been working for free since this whole thing started.

The New Zealand High Court authorized the release of $NZ6 million, that's $4.84 million or €3.86 million. But Dotcom has several restrictions on how that money can be spent. A large part of it will go towards paying his New Zealand lawyers, $NZ 2.6 million of it.

Another $NZ 1 million will be set aside for future legal costs. Finally, another $NZ 1 million is to go towards paying the rent on the expensive mansion Dotcom lives in, the one that got raided at the beginning of the year.

However, Dotcom's US lawyers, led by Ira Rothken won't get paid from this money. That legal bill is now up to $242,000, €193,000 and this is well before any legal proceedings got underway in the US.

The court also allowed Dotcom to sell some of his many luxury cars, which have been impounded by authorities, though any money he makes from that will be frozen and the court gets to decide what Dotcom can do with them. Dotcom still has a long battle ahead of him so the expenses will rack up fast.
