Hot in Haircare Now: Placenta Shampoo

If you’re looking for a product to bring some oomph back into your hair, placenta shampoo and treatments might be just the thing for you. They’re the hottest thing right now in haircare.

Placenta or afterbirth is already being used in various skin treatments and creams, so it was probably only a question of time before someone put it in a product meant for the hair.

Wash your hair with placenta shampoo or apply a no-rinse treatment, and you’ll see results instantaneously: the hair will be shiny and bouncy again, and you’ll forget even the meaning of “dull” and “frizz.”

Or so the makers of these products boast.

The bottom line is that they contain a “special placenta enzyme,” derived from cow and sheep afterbirth. China is the only country that uses human placenta for cosmetic products.

Erica Cheung, HuffPost Style intern, says she grew up applying a placenta treatment to her hair and it’s the best – and most normal – thing she can think of.

She says she learned this secret treatment from her mother and would advise nay-sayers to think twice before putting it down without as much as giving it a go.

Cheung personally vouches for all its benefits.

“It began when I was about five years old. My mother would take me to the kitchen, sit me on a bar stool and prepare a beauty concoction for my hair in a silverware spoon,” Cheung writes.

“She would heat it over a flame (usually on the stove) and when the liquid was hot, but not boiling, she would distribute it over my chocolate brown hair, concentrating on the scalp. I would spend the next 30-40 minutes with a plastic bag wrapped around my head, pretending I was a martian,” she adds.

“The concoction consisted of almond oil, tomato juice and placenta. Yes, placenta – like afterbirth,” Cheung further says.

These days, she swears by Hask Placenta No-Rise Instant Hair Repair Treatment, which literally transforms her hair: it “feels soft and smells really good for days” after she applies it.

If you’re not convinced yet of the benefits of this new trend in haircare, Cheung offers one final, ultimate argument: somebody is going to throw away the placenta so what can be the harm of putting it in your hair?
