Oculus Rift CEO Compares Virtual Reality Impact with That of Kinect

The Oculus Rift virtual reality headset has not even finished its Kickstarter funding period, but the team behind the new device already believes that it will have a huge impact on the gaming world, bigger than that made by Kinect.

Brendan Iribe, the chief executive officer working on the Oculus Rift project, argues that, “When we hear about next-gen consoles, ‘They’re gonna be 6 or 7 times faster’, great, another faster console.”
“It’s gonna be amazing, it’ll have some better looking graphics, some better physics and more realistic AI, but what is that new experience? What’s that new sensation that you play with and go ‘Oh my god, this is incredible’,” he hopes.

The executive believes that the best way of introducing innovation in the video games world is by creating new ways of interaction, like Microsoft has done with the Kinect motion-tracking system and Sony has done with the less ambitious PlayStation Move.

Iribe added, “When I put on the prototype of Rift, and I looked into the VR world, and I’m moving my head around, it’s perfectly tracking and I’m in this 3D world, that’s when I said ‘Oh my god, this is incredible, this is just gonna change everything’.”

The Oculus Rift CEO believes that the excitement that important game creators and engineers, like Gabe Newell, Michael Abrash and John Carmack, have shown for the virtual reality headset means that it will quickly get support via solid video games.

The mech-based Hawken will offer support for Oculus Rift on launch and after the Kickstarter funding period is over the team will probably announce more projects linked to it.

At the moment, with a few days to go, Oculus Rift has managed to attract 2 million dollars (1.595 million Euro).

At the moment those interested can only get development kits of the device.
