5 Million Kindle Fire Tablets Sold, Amazon "Confirms"

The Kindle Fire has been a success, that much everyone agrees on. But, as Amazon is wont to, the company has never issued any hard numbers, so it's hard to know just how many it has sold.

Well, it used to be hard, but we got a helping hand thanks to the press release announcing that the Kindle Fire has been "sold out."

In it, Amazon boss Jeff Bezos boasts that the Kindle Fire captured 22 percent of the US tablet market. Which means that we can find out how many were sold if we knew how many tablets were sold in total in the US for the past year.

Thankfully, the one good thing that came out of the Samsung vs. Amazon lawsuit is that both companies had to provide accurate sales data.

Based on that sales data, superstar Apple hobby analyst Horace Dediu arrived at the 5 million figure, which seems about right.

5 million Kindle Fires is quite significant, considering that Samsung only managed to sell about half a million Galaxy Tabs. Amazon is going to have a tough time repeating the feat this time around though.
