Google's 8th Summer of Code Comes to a Successful End

The eighth edition of the now venerable Google Summer of Code program has come to an end. For another summer, students got to hone their skills, work on a "real world" project and contribute to some of the most popular open source projects out there while Google footed the bill.

"In late May, 1,212 university students from 69 countries began writing code for 180 open source organizations with the help of 2220 mentors from 66 countries. We are excited to announce that just over 88%* (1072) of the students passed their final evaluations," Google announced.

It's safe to call this another success. Open source software got contributions that are so important to its existence.

At the same time, students have a very nice project to add to their resumes, not to mention that they got their hands dirty writing actual code. Google meanwhile got the PR boost it deserves for running the program. It's win, win, win.
