IFA 2012: Sony Xperia J Hands-On

Sony launched four new Xperia smartphones at IFA 2012 trade fair, and the Xperia J is the most affordable.

Even though the Xperia J is slightly less-featured when it comes to hardware in comparison with its bigger brothers Xperia T, TX and V, it still offers a smooth Android experience.

In this regard, the Xperia J is powered by Google's Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system out of the box.

Unfortunately, unlike the other three handsets that are expected to receive Android 4.1 Jelly Bean upgrades, the Xperia J has yet to be confirmed for this major update.

The smartphone sports a decent 4.0-inch capacitive touchscreen display that supports 480 x 854 pixels resolution, and features Corning Gorilla Glass coating for extra protections against scratches and scrapes.

Hardware-wise, the Xperia J is equipped with a 1 GHz single-core processor, 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal memory, which can be further expanded up to 32GB via microSD memory card.

On the back, the smartphone packs a 5-megapixel photo snapper with autofocus, LED flash and video recording, while in the front there's a secondary VGA camera for video calls.

Sony Xperia J offers a range of connectivity options, including HSDPA (7.2Mbps) and HSUPA (5.76Mbps), as well as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS.

The phone's 1750 mAh Li-Ion battery is rated by the manufacturer for up to 600 hours of standby time (620 hours in 3G mode) or up to 5.5 hours of talk time (7 hours in 3G mode).

According to Sony Mobile, the Xperia J won't make it to shelves earlier than Q4 2012, so stay tuned for more updates on availability and pricing options.

It is also worth mentioning that each customer who purchases an Xperia device will receive 60 days of free Unlimited Music service.
