Windows 8 Will Be Bad for Independent Developers, Minecraft Creator Says

Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson has shared his thoughts on the upcoming Windows 8 operating system, saying that, if Microsoft decides to close the PC platform, it would be extremely bad for small independent developers.

Windows 8 is going to appear in October and already many game developers are disapproving of Microsoft’s latest operating system, largely because it brings an integrated App Store and makes installing other programs much harder than on previous versions of the OS.

Valve’s Gabe Newell called Windows 8 a catastrophe and Blizzard’s Rob Pardo agreed.

Now, Markus Persson, the creator of Minecraft and owner of independent developer Mojang has also shared his thoughts on the OS, saying that, depending on Microsoft’s intentions, it could prove to be a very bad thing for independent developers like himself.

"If Microsoft decides to lock down Windows 8, it would be very, very bad for indie games and competition in general. If we can keep open platforms around, there's going to be a lot of very interesting games in ten years, mixed in with the huge AAA games that we all love," he said on Reddit.

As of yet, Microsoft hasn’t commented on any of these harsh critiques of Windows 8.
