uTorrent Will Get Slimmer and Swifter, a "Lite" Version Is Being Considered

Back in the day, BitTorrent clients used to be slow, bloated and confusing for less savvy users. And that was the best of them. But then uTorrent came along and changed everything. The entire app weighed a few hundred kilobytes, it ran from everywhere, had a spartan but functional interface and had a minimal impact on system resources.

In other words, it was the perfect BitTorrent client, an app that's designed to work in the background 99 percent of the time.

BitTorrent, the company behind the protocol, saw the potential along with the fact that uTorrent was miles better than anything it came up with and bought it up.

That was the beginning of the end, for many users. In fairness, uTorrent continued to be lightweight and fast for a long time after it was acquired by BitTorrent. Even the latest and somewhat maligned version, uTorrent 3 is arguably a swift app.

But it can't really be called spartan anymore, there are plenty of features and not just under the hood, the interface is becoming rather crowded. Plenty of people have criticized this, but either because of inertia or lack of an alternative, uTorrent remains the most popular BitTorrent client today, by far.

The company is hearing the critics though and may even come up with a "lite" version of uTorrent. This is not the first time we've heard about something like this and it's been one of the most popular solutions proposed by users.

But now, BitTorrent is acknowledging that uTorrent has gained some weight and is looking at what it can do to lose some. One of the first thing that it's going to do and that it's definitely doing is to get rid of the apps feature. But there are other plans and all options are being considered, including a lightweight version.

"We will be removing Apps in a near-future release because they've not been a success among our user base worldwide. Similarly, we will evaluate other existing features. We know that not every one of our features is a success, and our goal is to ship a slim base product with only those features users like and use," BitTorrent wrote in a forum post.

"Beyond this, we hear the calls among many of you for a µ that is smaller and meaner than the current µ. Something like 1.6, 2.0 or similar. Over the past year, we’ve discussed various paths to getting there and are taking this request seriously," it added.
