Series Creator Says First Assassins Creed Is Purest

Despite the increase in gameplay options and the depth of the story offered in the more recent Assassin’s Creed titles, at least one developer believes that the first release in the franchise is the most pure one in terms of player experience.

Patrice Desilets, the man who is credited with the creation of the first game in the series, has stated, “I like the first Assassin’s Creed because it’s the purest one. There’s a bunch of stories that you can have, but it’s all in your head. You have to create your own adventures.”

He added, “Whereas in Assassin’s Creed II we created the adventures for you and you’re following them. For me, the first one is an amazing toy. The second one is the real game with rules and missions and it’s really precise. But personally I like the poetry of the first one. It’s pure.”

The first Assassin’s Creed was widely praised on launch for its novel mechanics, including the ability to move freely through towns and its stealth elements, but the game was also criticized for a shallow story and a protagonist that gamers were unable to connect with.

Since then, publisher Ubisoft has expanded the series with a full-on sequel and with Brotherhood and Revelations, which focused on Renaissance character Ezio.

The core gameplay elements of the series were also expanded.

For the third game in the series, the action moves to the period of the American Revolutionary War and allows players to inhabit the body of Connor Kenway.

Assassin’s Creed III will be launched on the Xbox 360 from Microsoft, the PlayStation 3 from Sony and the PC on October 30 in North America and one day later in Europe.

The Nintendo Wii U home console will also have a version of the game available when it launches.
