The list of "focus areas" arriving with the first OS X 10.8.1 test build from Apple reveals that developers must resolve a problem relating to audio when a Mac is connected to a Thunderbolt display.
Apparently, the issue is not tied to Mountain Lion specifically. However, it seems it has been inherited from its predecessor, OS X (version 10.7) Lion.
In June, an Apple customer running OS X 10.7.4 on a new-generation MacBook Air started a discussion thread on Apple’s Support Communities forum, detailing the trouble he’d been having with a Thunderbolt display from Apple.
“After about 3 minutes, the audio is completely overcome with static; the original audio is totally indecipherbable [sic].”
The user specifically noted that he was only experiencing this problem when playing audio through the Thunderbolt Display’s speakers using his 2012 MacBook Air.
The seemingly savvy customer did some tests to zero in on the hardware at fault, and learned that the problem didn’t occur when playing audio through the 2012 MacBook Air's speakers, or when playing audio through the Thunderbolt display with a previous-generation MacBook Air (like the mid-2011 model).
He also had all currently-available software updates installed.
Numerous customers later replied to this customer’s post describing a similar, and sometimes identical experience.
One user claimed to have found that audio works fine if all USB connections are removed from the Thunderbolt Display.
“If I plug my Apple keyboard into a USB port on the Thunderbolt Display, and I let the audio play for a few minutes, the audio begins to degrade with static,” he wrote.
