Turkish Woman Decapitates Rapist, Wants to End Pregnancy

26-year-old Nevin Yildirim became a legend amongst the women of Turkey after she shot and decapitated her alleged rapist. 35-year-old Nurettin Gider had allegedly been raping her for 8 months, which resulted in an unwanted pregnancy.

The rapes apparently started in January, with Yildirim, her aunt's husband, climbing a wall behind her house and breaking in. The woman felt unprotected in the absence of her husband, who was away for a seasonal job, the Huffington Post reports.

Yildirim first forced himself on Nevin, and then started using blackmail to get her to cooperate. After she got pregnant, he took pictures of her naked body and threatened to make them public.

In Turkey, the news of her rape would have made her the social pariah, and not her rapist. She was afraid that her children would be ridiculed at school for something she had had no control over.

"My daughter will start school this year. Everyone would have insulted my children,” the woman said.

On August 28, the woman fought back. Her assailant broke in through the back entrance one more time. This time, she was waiting for him. She grabbed a rifle and shot him twice. Nevin claims the man was armed at the time.

The second shot was directed at his private parts, and it was the decisive one. Enraged and crazed, Nevin proceeded to decapitate Gider.

"He became quiet. I knew he was dead. I then cut his head off," she said.

She took the man's head by the hair, blood dripping all over her, and carried it to the village square.

"Here is the head of the man who played with my honor," she told the witnesses to this tragic and horrifying scene. “They will now call [my children] 'the kids of the women who saved her honor,'" Nevin added.

The Turkish woman is struggling to abort her assailants' child. When she first filed a petition to do so, she was 14 weeks pregnant. In Turkey if a woman has been pregnant for more than 10 weeks she is forbidden the procedure, as the risks would be too great.

The case has started a debate on the subject of abortion in Ankara. The mayor of the capital city of Turkey was actually recorded saying the woman should:

"kill herself instead and not let the child bear the brunt of her mistake.” Yes, her mistake.

Yildirim is still awaiting prosecution, as well as the officials' decision regarding the procedure.
