Toyota Developes Human Support Robot for Elderly and Disabled People

We've written about various robots so far, but the one that Toyota has just revealed isn't just a nice curiosity or some sort of special-purpose flying machine, or a trust detector. And we'll not even start on the maggots.

Toyota has labeled its invention the HSR (Human Support Robot), and we suspect that many people will be acquainted with it by the time the company next speaks about it. A better name may be found in the following months as well.

As far as looks go, the bot isn't too sophisticated. It has a sort of “head” with a dock where a tablet can be mounted.

Normally, the tablet is used by the disabled or elderly person to relay commands, but mounting it on the head of the machine will open avenues for video chat with friends, family and doctors. And that's not even mentioning the entertainment value.

On that note, relatives and caregivers can remotely control the robot instead of the one whom it is assisting.

And here is where people will ask what, exactly, the HSR can do. The answer is a simple list: pick up dropped objects, reach items on counters, adjust curtains, etc.

In other words, the robot can perform basic nursing tasks and some everyday chores that caretakers may not have time to do themselves.

Toyota is best known for its automobiles, but it also has various robots. It is, after all, a Japanese company, and the Japanese like their autonomous machinery, both in fiction and in real life.

That said, market-wise, HSR will have to compete with learning robots that can dress patients and other such creations.

Toyota should start shipping the HSR sometime soon, since live demos are scheduled at Tokyo International Exhibition Center on Wednesday (September 26) and Friday (September 28). Hopefully, the price won't make us shudder too much.
