Parappa the Rapper Creator Praises Nintendo for Creativity

A leading video game designer has suggested that Nintendo is the most important company in the gaming world because it manages to enlarge the audience for its products while Microsoft and Sony are creating titles that appeal to a limited number of gamers.

Rodney Greenblat, best known for creating Parappa the Rapper, told Notenoughshaders that, “I don’t find any lack of creativity in the game makers but there is a lack of creativity in the game buyers. I think developers would like to make a wide range of interesting games, but they are difficult to sell, so they don’t get made. So it is a problem of economics.”

He added, “The question really becomes how to open up video gaming to a wider audience. Nintendo works on this question 24/7. Playstation and Xbox have little incentive to do that. The frontier right now is phones and tablets, but once again it comes down to the buyers.”

Greenblat also wondered whether in the near future the revenue streams linked to mobile phones and tablets would be enough to sustain game developers and publishers.

Analysts have credited the launch of the Wii, which includes a motion-tracking tech for the first time and had lower computing power than its rivals, with expanding the borders of the gaming world as it made console titles attractive to customers that were not previously interested.

Before the end of 2012, Nintendo will launch the new Wii U home console, which delivers more computing power and a new touch screen enabled controller.

Neither Sony nor Microsoft has announced plans for a new generation of home consoles.

Rumors have suggested features that include expanded motion tracking, a focus on digital distribution and support for virtual reality elements.

Both companies are expected to make official announcements during the E3 trade show in 2013.
