Nvidias GK106 GPU Has 2.54 Billion Transistors and 384 KB Level 2 Cache

Many were wondering about the strange arrangement of 960 CUDA cores inside Nvidia’s new GK106 Kepler-based GPU.

Yet, the first company graphs show that it indeed comes with two whole Graphics Processing Clusters (GPC) and a smaller GPC containing a single SMX.

This is a strange arrangement on the new design, but it may be so because the company desired a greater die-size difference between the GK106 and GK104.

Ideally, the GK106 would have had just half of GK104’s die area, but that was not possible.

Implementing three whole GPC units would have made the two GPUs be approximately the same size and as such the company reportedly decided that a 2.54 billion transistor count would be the maximum for the GK106.

Even so, the GK106 is a powerful GPU with 80 texture mapping units (TMUs), 24 raster operating units (ROPs) and 960 CUDA cores.
