LaCie Intros Rugged External Drives with ThunderBolt and USB 3.0


Well-known computer peripherals company LaCie has just announced the availability of a new series of external storage devices that feature two of the fastest connection technologies. The new drives come in a shock protective case and have both, ThunderBolt and USB 3.0 connectors.

The company offers the rugged drives in HDD versions as well as SSD versions and the protective casing is MIL-compliant (that’s a military-grade standard).

The company touts high resistance against accidental shocks and claims that the drive will remain in good working condition after an accidental 1.2 meters (4 feet) drop.

What LaCie is not saying is the status of the dropped drive, as we have serious doubts that an external HDD being dropped from 1.2 meters would be in good working condition if it were writing data at the moment of the shock.

HDDs are very sensitive when writing data and if it receives a shock while performing a write action, it will certainly affect the platter and fragments of the metal surface will destroy the rest of the drive.

It is very important to know if these drops can occur while the drive is working or not.

Moreover, the 1.2-meter height limit is quite modest as these accidents usually happen when you are standing up and you are handling the drive and therefore the height will surely be greater than 1.2m.

The company is offering a 1TB HDD version and a 120 GB SSD version, but rest assured that the latter will likely not be affected by any drop no matter how rugged the protected casing is.
