Guild Wars 2 Sells More Than 2 Million Units

Since being launched, two weeks ago, the MMO Guild Wars 2 has managed to sell more than two million units across the world, according to publisher NCsoft and developer ArenaNet, with more than 400,000 usually engaged with the game at the same time.

Mike O’Brien, the president and the co-founder of ArenaNet, stated, “Reactions from around the world justified the time and care we put into developing Guild Wars 2 and making it into the game it is today.”

He added, “And this is only the beginning. We’re continually fine-tuning the game to deliver the polished experience that our players expect, and we’re already working on new adventures and experiences to introduce into this truly dynamic online world.”

Guild Wars 2 uses a unique business model: players can purchase the game package, either at retail or via digital distribution, and then play all the content for as long as they want without paying a monthly subscription.

Gamers also have the option to use in-game or real-world money in order to get quick access to some items, mostly cosmetic.

ArenaNet plans to make money from sales of the base game and by launching regular expansion packs that will add to the game world and introduce new playable races.

Guild Wars 2 has also been widely praised by reviewers, who were impressed by the solid nature of the game and the innovative world and quest design.

ArenaNet is encouraging players to report any issues they are having with the game in order to allow them to deliver quick fixes.

Guild Wars 2 might see a slowdown in sales and in player numbers in the coming weeks as Blizzard launched the Mists of Pandaria expansion for World of Warcraft.

The Blizzard MMO remains the biggest subscription-driven MMO in the world, although it has been losing subscribers for the last couple of years.
