Google Didn't Believe Rounded Corners Were Patentable

Google has stayed out of the big battle between Apple and Samsung, even though it's quite clearly in the middle of it. But it didn't want to get dragged in more than it had to.

But it can't resist not taking a swipe at Apple from time to time, in a Bloomberg interview David Lawee, Google's vice president of corporate development, said he and Google were surprised by the outcome of the lawsuit.

"We didn't believe rounded corners were patentable," he argued. Which sounds like a clear and direct attack on Apple. And it is, but there's more to it.

"We actually didn’t invest in the patent ecosystem,” Lawee actually said. “We weren’t patenting things as aggressively as we should have been. We didn’t really believe rounded corners were patentable. We just didn’t buy into that notion of protecting your IP, and it was a wake-up call."

What he's actually referring to is Google's attitude towards patents prior to the huge lawsuits of recent years. Google, like most other tech companies in Silicon Valley, preferred to innovate rather than patent any small thing that one of its engineers or designers came up with.
