Europe Runs Out of IPv4 Addresses, Following Asia

It's over, Europe has officially run out of IPv4 addresses, well, it has almost run out. The European registry, RIPE NCC (Réseaux IP Européens Network Coordination Centre), is now down to 16.8 million addresses, that's a full "/8" in technical speak, but they're reserved for certain groups.

In essence, it is impossible to get any new IPv4 addresses handed out to anyone in Europe at this point. Obviously, ISPs and everyone interested still have a cache of addresses they've been holding on to and there are solutions to the shortage that should hold everyone until the switch is made to IPv6.

But it's obvious that the switch can't come any faster. What's surprising is that ISPs, for the most part, don't seem to be in much of a hurry to adopt the new protocol, so it's safe to assume that the problem isn't as grave as it looks.

Asia ran out of them back in 2011 and the rest of the continental registries have small reserves left. Still, IPv6 can't come fast enough. Thankfully, several large sites are already supporting it.
