DDR3 DRAM Prices Continuously Falling

PC users now have a wonderful opportunity to double the RAM size inside their computers as the prices of this component is now in a continuous downward spiral and the trend is not going to change anytime soon.

The DRAM market is a very tough business to be in right now.

Big companies even go bankrupt because of the price competition and a good example is Japanese company Elpida.

One Elpida Memory went bankrupt, other DRAM maker took over its operations and those became even more powerful than before, thus putting even more pressure on the other companies in the field.

Global PC sales reportedly went down by 2.5%, compared with sales achieved during this period a year ago.

Contract prices for DRAM continued to fall during the past month and a DDR3 4GB module ended up costing just $18 (14 EUR) and this translates into a significant 4% decrease.

The spot price has dropped even lower to just $17.5 (13.6 EUR) and this is a 5% decrease.

The price of a DDR2 2GB module decreased by a more modest margin of just 2.4%, but considering that the pricing sits at just $10.25 (8 EUR), we believe there isn’t room for bigger “discounts.”

Some of the DRAM makers want to reorient their businesses toward market sectors with more acceptable margins and where technological differentiation will allow achieving decent sales.

A market sector with good potential in this direction is the mobile DRAM market where a product that consumes considerably less will have a chance to achieve good sales based on this feature alone and even better if other features are packed with it.

Even so, if there was ever a good time to upgrade your memory, that time is now.
