Chrome Is Slowing Down in August, IE Close to Getting Its Crown Back

Google Chrome's market share is dropping for the first time, at least in StatCounter data, but not enough to pull it down from its top spot. Chrome is still the most popular browser in the world, ahead of IE. Chrome had a 33.59 percent slice of the global web browser market at the end of August, compared to 33.81 percent in July.

The difference is too small to make too much of it, it should fall within the margin of error, but it means that IE is actually getting closer to Chrome and has gained market share for the first time in a long period. IE's share is at 32.85 percent for August, up from 32.04 in July.

It's anyone's guess as to why Chrome has started dropping while IE grows. Maybe it's because students are spending more time away from their computers during the summer.

On the other hand, a lot of employees are taking their vacations in August, which would mean a drop in IE usage at work. We'll find out soon enough, as students go back to school and everyone else back to work, we should see more interesting changes in September.

Meanwhile Firefox continues its slow decline, going from 23.73 percent in July to 22.85 percent in August. Mozilla keeps on improving Firefox, but maybe it can't match Google's marketing machine.

At the same time, IE9 is good enough that fewer people feel the need to change it as soon as they do a fresh Windows install or get a new computer.

With IE10 landing soon, part of Windows 8 and with it being harder to change from the default browser spot, that trend will probably increase. Windows 8 is landing next month, so the end of the year should be interesting to watch.
