Bob Mansfield Might Still Retire Soon

When Dan Riccio took over Bob Mansfield’s duties as Vice President of Hardware Engineering, Apple announced that Mansfield was simply going to “work on future products.” Some see this as a good starting point for speculation that Apple is rolling out something big. That might not be the case at all.

A press release from the Cupertino giant in June stated that “Bob Mansfield, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering, will retire and the role will be transitioned to Dan Riccio, Apple’s vice president of iPad Hardware Engineering, over several months.” (emphasis ours)

The Mac maker clarified that the hardware engineering team will continue to report to Mansfield until he runs off for good.

Earlier this week Apple announced that Dan Riccio was taking up his new role as Vice President of Hardware Engineering. Additionally, Craig Federighi has been appointed Vice President of Mac Software Engineering.

Both have now joined Apple’s executive team as Senior Vice Presidents. Now, here's where it gets interesting (some would say).

In the same announcement, Apple also confirmed that that “Bob Mansfield, who announced his retirement in June, will remain at Apple. Mansfield will work on future products, reporting to Tim Cook,” said the fruity company. (again, the highlights are ours)

The statement from Cupertino prompted some Apple watchers to speculate that Mansfield, now simply touted as “Senior Vice President,” would oversee the introduction of some spectacular new products.

That might be so, but there’s also a good chance Mansfield is just sticking around until Riccio gets the handle of things.

After all, Apple did say “The entire hardware engineering team will continue to report to Mansfield until his departure.”

Apple is known to part with its key executives in a gradual manner. Steve Jobs’ retirement was a good example of that. Tony Fadell’s resignation was also something that likely cooked for a long time in Apple’s kitchen.

Now, does anyone honestly think that Mansfield, after announcing his planned retirement, has pulled a 180 to help develop Apple’s next big thing? Not likely.

For what it’s worth, take a look at Apple’s updated description of Bob Mansfield, Senior Vice President (also pictured above). See what you can make of it, then sound off in the comments if you have a plausible theory of your own.
