Blizzard Talks About Next World of Warcraft Expansion, Windows 8

Just as it’s releasing the new World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria expansion all over the world, Blizzard has talked about the future of the online game and has pledged that the title, together with all Blizzard experiences, will support Windows 8, the controversial new operating system from Microsoft.

World of Warcraft’s number of subscribers may be slowly decreasing but it still has millions of active players from all around the world, many of whom are now waiting to download the Mists of Pandaria expansions.

Blizzard has talked with CVG about new add-ons for World of Warcraft and has revealed that, while ideas are being explored, the ever-changing nature of an online game like WoW makes it hard to predict what things will be included in new expansions.

“As far more expansions go there are certainly ideas for expansions, like say, story ideas. You'll see some set-ups for future story ideas in Mists Of Pandaria, in some of the storylines of major characters,” said Blizzard’s Senior Game Designer, Scott Mercer.

“The thing is, though, World Of Warcraft is a constantly evolving world and while might have an idea on where certain stories in it might go, we're very conscious of its changing nature so there's no real concrete answer about where its story and lore will go in the future. There's no wrong or right answer about what the future might bring.”

While the future is murky, one thing’s for sure, Blizzard games will support the upcoming Windows 8 operating system, at least according to Senior Software Engineer Darren Williams, who says that, while the OS may be controversial, the studio will serve games to its customers on that platform.

“We put our games on platforms our players are already on, so yeah, it will be available on Windows 8. We haven't worked with Windows 8 directly yet, but we'll certainly switch over to it. I think that we'll go with the platforms that the most people are on. There's no particular fear we have of Windows 8.”

Various games industry members, including Blizzard's Rob Pardo, have voiced their concerns over Windows 8 as they believe it tries to close the open PC platform with its App Store and other regulations.
