Benedict Cumberbatch Disses CBS Elementary Sherlock Holmes Series

It’s hard even to imagine that Benedict Cumberbatch would ever think badly of a different take on Sherlock Holmes considering the loyal, impressive fanbase he’s built on his run on BBC One’s “Sherlock,” but this is precisely what a new report suggests.

Cumberbatch will soon get ready to shoot season 3 of the “Sherlock” series, a modern, very well received take on the classic story.

Until this one airs, audiences in the US will also be getting a healthy dose of Sherlock, thanks to a CBS project called “Elementary,” which stars Jonny Lee Miller as Sherlock and Lucy Liu as his trusted sidekick, Watson.

E! Online quotes Cumberbatch as saying some pretty nasty things about the series which, truth be told now, is already getting lots of negative hype even though it’s not even out yet.

“I got hold of the pilot script just to check it out. I don’t know, we’ll see. I think there’s room for us both to coexist. I don’t feel threatened by it and I wish him the best, which is as diplomatic as I can be,” Benedict reportedly said in a recent interview.

Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller are actually friends, as it must already be common knowledge. E! quotes Benedict as saying he tried to reason with Miller, to talk him out of doing this new show, which can’t promise to hold a candle to BBC’s “Sherlock.”

“It’s very odd. I did say [to Miller], ‘Well, I’d prefer you didn’t do it but you’ve got a kid to feed, a nice house in LA and a wife to keep in good clothes’,” Cumberbatch reportedly said.

“I think Jonny was like, ‘Mate, I’ve got the [expletive]-ing mountain to climb here, you’ve got nothing to fear.’ I wish him the best of luck, but I’m a bit cynical about why they’ve chosen to do it and why they cast him,” he added.

The moment this report got out online, some were quick to point that Cumberbatch was acting like a major diva, talking as if he had monopoly over the Sherlock Holmes role.

He doesn’t. Moreover, he was misunderstood, the actor says in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.

“I never said that Johnny took the job for the paycheck nor did I ask him not to do it. What I said is I would have preferred not to be in the situation where we will again be compared because we are friends. I know for a fact his motivations were to do with the quality of the script and the challenges of this exceptional role,” Cumberbatch says.

He adds that he would never presume to expect Sherlock-based or inspired projects to end now that he’s also starred in one, which, of course, makes sense.

If you’re not familiar with Cumberbatch’s work on the BBC One series, here is a trailer for season 1 of “Sherlock.”
