Apple Approves BitTorrent iPhone App, Conttrol

After rejecting dozens of apps merely for mentioning “BitTorrent” in their iTunes descriptions, Apple has approved a remote administration tool for iOS that interfaces with µTorrent and BitTorrent servers via their Web API.

Apple was known not to allow any apps dealing with BitTorrent “because this category of applications is often used for the purpose of infringing third-party rights.”

However, Apple has recently approved “Conttrol,” an app that allows uTorrent users to control their desktop client through the Web-UI.

Users can perform actions such as start, stop, add and delete torrents. It’s basically a remote interface for your home desktop.

“Currently the app supports connections to uTorrent & BitTorrent clients but there are future plans to support Transmission on the Mac, as well as planned development of a native iPad version,” Conttrol developer Craig Donnelly told TorrentFreak.

The iTunes description states that “Conttrol is a lightweight, easy to use, remote administration tool that interfaces with µTorrent and BitTorrent servers via their inbuilt Web API.”

In other words, Apple may have loosened up on its policy to revoke any apps that mention BitTorrent.

“This enables you to administer and monitor what your computer is transferring right from the palm of your hand,” reads the description.

The literature also includes a note that states “No downloads are performed on the iOS device, all operations take place on remotely connected host.”

According to the “key features” list, users can monitor status of all operations,  Start/Stop/Delete, invoke torrent/magnet downloads by URL submission, open torrent files from other applications, store credentials, and control both OS X and Windows hosts.

“We all know there is a stigma associated with the BitTorrent protocol and that it is heavily associated with piracy. But I think this attitude has changed in recent years, and will change even further in the future,” said Donnelly.

Conttrol is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation) and iPad and requires iOS 4.0 or later. It sells for $3.99 (2.99 EUR) and appears to be available only in the US App Store for now.

There’s also a good chance this one simply slipped through the net. We might see it pulled in the next few days.
