Android-Based HP Bender Spotted in Benchmarks

Only one day after HP’s CEO Meg Whitman said that the computer maker should come up with a smartphone, such a device has started to emerge in benchmarks, namely the HP Bender.

However, contrary to general belief, HP’s smartphone won’t run under webOS, but it will adopt Google’s Android operating system.

Code-named Bender, the HP-branded smartphone was spotted in GLBenchmark with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on board.

The listing also unveiled that it was powered by a dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor clocked in at 1.5GHz, which suggests that it could arrive on shelves as a mid- to high-end smartphone.

If so, we wouldn’t be surprised if HP actually loaded Google’s Android 4.1 Jelly Bean platform on it, that’s for sure.

Moreover, the handset is said to sport a 1366 x 720 pixel resolution, though specific info on its display’s size was not made available as of yet.

As mentioned above, HP Bender was spotted soon after the company’s CEO publicly acknowledged the need to launch a smartphone.

Of course, she said that HP is not rushing the launch of such a device, while also assuring us that the handset would be solid.

As it turns out, the company is already working on this device, although a specific release date was not provided as of yet.

Going for Google’s mobile platform might actually prove to be a great move from HP, especially since webOS has lost user interest almost entirely, even if it was made available as open source.

What remains to be seen is how well HP’s handset will fare when compared to Android smartphones coming from leading vendors out there, such as Samsung, HTC, LG or Motorola.

Undoubtedly, the company will work hard on making sure that its device will manage to impress, yet competition on the market is increasingly fierce, which often proves a major issue for newcomers.
