A Gamers Week: September 9

The only review we have this week for you is one for Sleeping Dogs, the open-world action game from developer United Front Games and publisher Square Enix, which proved to be a nice mix of solid mechanics that fails to impress when it comes to the narrative space.

We also have the usual two Gamer Diaries, one of them linked to the Gamescom 2012 trade event and the big titles that we saw while we were in Cologne and another one about Sword of Islam, a CK II-based expansion.

My colleague, Andrei Dobra, is on vacation, so we only have one Weekend Reading for you this week, talking about the reasons for the big decline in the subscription-based MMO space.

As always, we also deliver an EndWeekGame piece and the most important news from the week that passed us by.

On Monday, BioWare talked about how their position on free-to-play changed as the MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic made the shift to the new business model, while Bethesda offered Minecraft and crafting as the inspiration for Skyrim’s Hearthfire.

On Tuesday, DICE offered information on the assignments and the Achievements for the Armored Kill DLC for Battlefield 3 and EA Sports talked about the lack of cross-platform play in FIFA 13.

On Wednesday, a source inside Microsoft said the next generation of consoles would only arrive in 2014 and Ubisoft renounced DRM on PC-based titles.

On Thursday, we found out that a Wii U-based Zelda would arrive in 2014 and Ubisoft offered more information on how it approached PC development.

On Friday, Football Manager 2013 was announced, while a rumor revealed that the Xbox 720 was delayed because of problems with AMD processors.

On Saturday, we talked about the new Declassified Black Ops game that would be launched on the Vita and about Valve’s plans for Greenlight.
