A Cup of Tea a Day Improves Memory

Chinese investigators found in a new study that green tea has multiple positive effects on the human brain. In addition to improving the functionality of neurons in general, it also boosts our memory abilities, as well as spatial learning.

The fact that green tea is able to exert an effect on cellular mechanisms in the brain was not known until now, say researchers at the Third Military Medical University, in China. What experts did know was that the stuff works well in preventing cardiovascular damage, and as a source of antioxidants.

“We proposed that [the organic antioxidant epigallocatechin-3 gallate] EGCG can improve cognitive function by impacting the generation of neuron cells, a process known as neurogenesis. We focused our research on the hippocampus,” the team explains.

Details of the investigation appear in the latest issue of the journal Molecular Nutrition & Food Research, PsychCentral reports.
