Valve Unveils New Steam Community Features

Valve has revealed that it’s overhauling the existing community section of its Steam digital distribution service and that it’s going to present a new feature each day this week, starting with the Game Hubs that will highlight the array of user-generated content for every game in Steam’s catalog.

Steam is one of the biggest digital distribution services out there, earning the loyalty of millions of PC and Mac users (and soon of Linux enthusiasts, too). Sadly, its community features haven’t exactly shined, as this portion of Steam allowed users just to check out what their friends did in their own games and not much else.

Now, Valve aims at overhauling the Steam Community section by introducing an array of new features throughout the week.

"This update focuses on highlighting and enabling the best user-created screenshots, videos, and Workshop items for games across Steam while making it easier for the community to discuss their favorite games," the company said.

The first new feature is called Game Hub, and will highlight "the most popular user-created screenshots, videos, and Steam Workshop items as rated by the community and combine it with related news, discussions, and comments for the game all in one central location."

There’s certainly lots of content to be showcased in these new Game Hubs, as Valve points out that tens of millions of things have been created by Steam users.

"The New Steam Community is all about showing off the best content that gamers have created," said Valve’s Emily Kent. "With over 89 million screenshots, videos, Steam Workshop maps, levels, mods, and items, plus news articles and product updates, the community has created an unbelievable wealth of content around their favorite games."

New features will be showcased every day until August 16 and a beta for those interested in trying them out is going to be released soon.
