US Court Confirms That $675,000 for Sharing 30 Songs Is Fair

No matter what you think of it, sharing files that you're not allowed to share online is illegal. You may not agree with it, but as long as it's the law in most places on Earth, there's not much you can do about it.

That said, even if it's illegal, sharing a few songs, even many songs, for others to grab isn't exactly the most despicable crime in the world. Actually, it's not even a crime in most cases, this is a civil issue and not a criminal one.

Most people would agree and should agree that $675,000, EUR540,000 in damages for sharing 30 songs is so far from reasonable that it doesn't even need any explanation. It's basic common sense.

Not to the US courts though. The Joel Tenenbaum case has been around for years and it's probably going to drag on a while longer. It's been in front of several courts, but the latest trial, in a district court, upheld the initial damage awards, $675,000 for 30 songs shared by an individual in an obviously non-commercial matter.
