TOSHIBA Demonstrates Its First 1TB Hybrid HDD

Japanese giant Toshiba has been used by Western Digital, Seagate and the authorities as the puppet to play the role of the third “competitor” in the global HDD market. After acquiring virtually all the competition, Seagate and WD now rule over 90% of the global HDD market and exactly 100% of the 3.5” HDD market.

Toshiba is touted as the third competitor, but with less than 8% of the world's market and zero percent of the 3.5" HDD market, the Japanese company has almost no competitive impact that would bring the buyer any kind of advantage.

The company promised it would start focusing on Hybrid HDDs and Toshiba has just demonstrated the result of its effort regarding this storage solution.

The first Hybrid HDDs were made by Seagate and launched years ago with disappointing performance and huge prices. Now, Toshiba is apparently following into its American competitor footsteps.

Although most of the industry specialists along with Intel and WD agree that a 200 to 1 HDD capacity to NAND capacity ratio must be present into a Hybrid HDD (HHD) for tangible performance improvements to be achieved, Seagate only had a 125 to 1 ratio.

Toshiba doesn’t seem to be willing to do any better, and its first HHD features the same 125 to 1 ratio as Seagate’s initial HHDs.

The unit has 1 TB of HDD storage capacity and just 8 GB of NAND flash.

Therefore, the performance is right in line with Toshiba’s small NAND capacity and the company is reportedly touting results of 80 MB/s in FutureMark’s Vantage benchmark and a total score of 16,000 points.

These performance figures are very disappointing, and the fact that the new drive has a 9.5-millimeter thickness only adds to our dismay.

Where exactly does Toshiba think these drives will be used? They won’t fit in most modern notebooks, ultra thins and netbooks and they’re clearly too slow to be used in desktops.

The company itself declared here that it wouldn’t make enterprise HHDs, so we’re wondering why should anybody buy anything like this.

There were no pricing or launch schedule details unveiled, but we really hope Toshiba will bring at least 50 GB of NAND in the retail models that will likely be launched later this year.
