Sony Ready to Succeed on Open Mobile Platforms

Video game publisher and hardware maker Sony is ready to move the PlayStation brand to as many devices as possible, and it’s looking to make sure that the same level of game quality is available on everything from the PlayStation 3 to Android-powered hardware.

Jim Ryan, the leader of the European division of PlayStation, argues that, “PS2 was not a connected device. PSP was not really a proper connected device. PS3 is and PS Vita most definitely is. So we have the ability now to have devices talk to each other.”

He believes that all the people who are now using mobile devices and tablets for their gaming needs can be persuaded that they can get a better experience by using a PlayStation-branded device or application.

“We see it a real opportunity to take that constituency and offer them a PlayStation experience, whether that is with an emulated virtual dual shock, or whether it is the use of PSN functionality, which will come in the future,” he hopes.

Ryan believes that it will be easier for gamers to play games as long as they see the PlayStation brand and know that they can get the same kind of experiences that are available on home consoles and on other proprietary hardware.

The Sony executive acknowledges that the move to open devices is something completely new for his company and what it might make some mistakes during the early stages.

Sony is currently manufacturing the PlayStation 3 home console and the PSP and Vita handhelds, and the company also has a mobile phone collaboration.

The company is also thought to be working on the PlayStation 4 home console, although the company refused to offer any details on the hardware.

An official announcement is now expected at E3 2013, with a potential launch date set for late during next year.
