By the end of the month Sony will begin shipping a certain product that it would have launched last month (July 2012) had it not run into problems at the quality control stage.
The TV Tuner, for that is what it is (in part at least), bears the name of “Nasne” and will be sold alongside the “Torne” version 4.1, a dedicated TV application for PlayStation 3 (PS3).
Nasne, whose product number is CECH-ZNR1J, measures roughly 43 x 189 x 136 mm, or 1.69 x 7.44 x 5.35 inches.
That's only part of its functionality though. Sony also gave it a LAN port, antenna in and out connectors, an external HDD connector and a B-CAS card slot.
What's more, the device has a 2.5-inch internal hard disk drive of 500 GB. Making it qualify as a NAS media streamer as well.
Add to that DLNA 1.5 support, live tuner, DMS streaming and file server features and there is more than enough reason for Sony to describe the Nasne as a “networked recorder and media storage device.”
The price of Sony's Nasne will be 16,980 yen, which converts into $215 and 173.47 Euro, give or take.
The “VAIO TV with Nasne” (beta version) application for VAIO PCs will be out at the same time, as will an updated “RECOPLA” for easily accessing and using “Nasne” through Sony Tablets.
“SCE will continue to aggressively expand the new world of entertainment through the combination of 'nasne' and PlayStation platforms as well as various other devices and services,” Sony stated.
For those interested, the product package will include the Nasne itself, an AC adaptor, a power cable, a LAN cable, a B-CAS card, one RF coaxial cable, the quick start guide and a digital terrestrial broadcasting watching/recorder application for PS3 (Blu-ray Disc).
