Shia LaBeouf Gained 40 Pounds (18.1 Kg) for Lawless

When Shia LaBeouf was cast in “Lawless” opposite Tom Hardy, whose brother he plays, he was thrilled by the idea of working with him. At the same time, he also realized he'd have to gain some weight to be a more believable brother to the guy who most recently played Bane in “The Dark Knight Rises.”

To promote the upcoming film, which is already garnering solid reviews, Shia sat down for an interview with Jay Leno, which you will also find embedded at the end of this article.

He explains that he gained about 40 pounds (18.1 kg) to play the skinnier but equally dangerous Bondurant brother, just because Tom was “a big boy” already and he wanted to really look like he could be his brother.

However, contrary to what one might imagine, the experience wasn't a fun one, Shia insists.

“Once Tom Hardy got cast, he's a big boy and it became, 'Are we from the same fabric of man, can I be your brother?' Standing next to him I felt like [singer] Josh Groban, I just felt very meek,” the actor recalls.

“I gained about 40lbs,” he goes on to say. Tom also lost some of the weight he gained to play the villain in the third and final Batman film, which is still running in theaters.

Shia says the experience was rather “horrible” and monotonous.

“Just eating, your whole lifestyle becomes something else. Every three hours you consume, food becomes vitamins, it's about necessity, which is gorging, it's horrible,” he tells Jay.

“It was protein shakes really, a lot of chicken and eggs. At night, you wake up every three hours, take the shake and wake up. It's monotonous. You only have a certain amount of time, I had a month, two months to get there,” Shia explains.

His girlfriend Karolyn Pho didn't find the change an improvement to his old self, he jokes.

“I was sweating like a beast, snoring, it was a disaster you know, terrible,” he laughs.

Shia also introduced a new video from the film, in which his character stands up to his brother, Hardy. It's really worth a watch.

“Lawless” will be out in theaters on August 29.
