Retina MacBook Pro Burn-in Issue Tied to Faulty LG Displays

Retina MacBook Pro owners noticing a burn-in on their screens might need to take their units back to Apple. Apparently the issue has been linked to a faulty batch of screens manufactured by Korea-based LG Display.

While Apple is yet to announce a recall of all affected MacBook Pros, it appears the culprit has been isolated. Most, if not all of the affected systems, appear to have their screens manufactured by LG Display.

Some customers who have already seen the Genius bar at Apple’s retail stores have been promised replacement units. It is unclear whether Apple is aware of the issue - thus replacing the faulty units with systems that have their screens manufactured by Samsung.

According to several reports (one about 10 days old), the Retina MacBook Pros equipped with Samsung screens do not exhibit the burn-in / ghosting issue.

Users writing in a lengthy thread on Apple’s official forums say the Mac makers are working up a software update, though it seems highly unreasonable to treat a hardware issue with a software patch.

The forum thread in question was highlighted by Softpedia on August 2nd. At the time, the discussion had racked up a mere 10,000 views (since June 16th), though it was still enough to determine that something was up with the Retina display on the new MacBook Pro.

The now-escalated issue has prompted many more customers to take to the Apple Support Communities board. The same thread now counts 151,571 views at over a hundred pages long. In other words, it’s widespread.

We have contacted Apple to get more clarification on the matter, such as: will there be a recall?; is Apple working on a fix?; has LG been confirmed as the manufacturer to blame?

In the meanwhile, you can use the comments to report your own experience with Apple’s new notebook.
