Reddit has always been a great place to get something started and get the "community" involved. It's not always rainbows and butterflies, but a lot of good can and is being done via the site.
Which is why Reddit decided to make it easier and more organized with the introduction of new options for donations, directly via the site.
“For nonprofit projects in particular, we wanted to find some low or no fee options so that as much of redditors' money goes to the cause and not to payment processing and other fees," it explained the need for the new options.
"We also wanted to see more built in accountability and fraud checks, so that redditors can be more confident that their money is going where they think it is. Additionally, we wanted easier ways for mods to integrate fundraisers into their subreddits," it said.
"We now have two new and promising tools that should help make it easier and more reliable for future fundraising and charitable giving," Reddit announced.
Reddit now supports Crowdtilt, which has built a Reddit-specific section on its site, to enable users to both easily pledge money and receive it with as fewer commissions and fees as possible. Crowdtilt is more of a crowdfunding, or rather a group funding platform, than a donation platform.
But that is covered by the new Reddit Donate, created by Dwolla, an online payments company, and Stripe, a platform for payments for developers. The two banded together and created a new site specifically for Reddit.
Reddit Donate enables moderators to quickly create new fundraising campaigns and embed them into the subreddits they run. Reddit users can then simply click the "donate" button on the site to make a contribution. Both of these options are designed for nonprofits in particular and work with verified organizations only.
