Motorola DROID 4 Receiving Android 4.0.4 ICS Update Now

Released back in February, Motorola DROID is finally receiving the long-awaited Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update.

Although the phone was launched with Android 2.3 Gingerbread platform out of the box, Motorola promised the DROID 4 will get its Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade by the end of the year.

A few weeks ago, Verizon and Motorola successfully completed a soak test for Ice Cream Sandwich update and today the carrier has started to push it to all DROID 4 devices.

The official changelog of the major software update has already been published by Verizon, but it’s listed as “Coming Soon.” However, the folks over at AndroidCentral claim that several DROID 4 owners have already reported that the update is now available for download.

Aside from bringing the phone’s software to Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich, the update also activates the global roaming capabilities of the Motorola DROID 4, bringing voice and data services in over 205 countries worldwide.

Those who have yet to be notified on the update should know that this is version number 6.16.217.XT894.Verizon.en.US and has around 360MB in size.

To manually check for the update simply head over to Settings / About phone / System update. If it doesn’t show on the screen, we recommend checking back later as the update is pushed in stages, so not all DROID 4 owners will get it at the same time.

Other changes available in this Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich update for Motorola DROID 4 include:

- Integration of new version of Backup Assistant Plus;
- Mobile IM has been removed;
- Color for Facebook application is preloaded.

- Successfully download and save ringtones.

Stability and Performance Improvements
- Mobile Hotspot – Improved connectivity;
- Reduced device resets and power cycling;
- Camera quality has been improved for better pictures;
- Improved My Gallery performance;
- Voice Mail Notification shows the correct of unread messages.
