Kingston Develops Windows To Go USB Flash Drive

While most people are focused on the upcoming Windows 8 operating system for consumers, Microsoft is preparing the Windows 8 Enterprise version as well, something that did not escape Kingston's notice.

One of the capabilities of the Windows 8 Enterprise OS is to run off a single flash drive unit. This is called Windows To Go.

It allows any one user to boot and operate from more than one PC, all the while meeting all Windows 8 certification requirements.

Kingston's DataTraveler Workspace USB fully bootable flash drive is one example of a Windows To Go-ready device, good for instances where staff members bring their own devices and want to share information between PCs.

The USB 3.0 technology makes sure data transfers are fast and smooth, SSD-level even.

The success isn't attributed to Kingston alone though. Other IT players contributed to the final outcome, in their own way.

“We appreciate the work from Genesys Logic, Inc., who have helped ensure that the drive is compatible and can boot from the latest systems,” said Andrew Ewing, Flash memory business manager, Kingston.

“Kingston would also like to recognize the work of LSI Corporation in helping to ensure the forthcoming USB Flash drive with their SandForce Flash Storage Processor meets the performance requirements of Windows To Go.”

Currently, Kingston only has a beta version of the drive, but samples of it can still be used by organizations and enterprises to familiarize themselves with Windows To Go. A final model should enter mass production later this year (2012), when Microsoft releases its operating system.

“Kingston has been working together with Microsoft for over a year in developing a USB Flash drive capable of meeting the requirements of Windows To Go. We are excited to offer this drive to our enterprise customers later this year,” said Andrew Ewing.
