iOS 6 Uses Any Song as Your Alarm Clock Ringer

A new option in iOS 6, that has received little attention so far, will enable early birds to wake up to their favorite tune. No longer are we bound to Apple’s crazy ringtones for alarm clock sounds.

No offense, Apple, but most of the ringtones iOS ships with suck. Harp and Timba must be the only two decent sounds coming out of the speakers when your phone tries to wake you up at 7 a.m after a night out with the buds.

But we digress.

While you can go through some trouble to have other tones installed, iOS 6 promises a much easier approach.

The software solves the ringtone problem once and for all thanks to a new option in the Clock application where you can pick a song from your iPod library.

Available under the “Sound” selector when setting a new alarm (or when editing one), the new option is also making its way to the iPad, through the new Clock application designed by Apple specifically for the tablet computer.

“iOS 6 continues the rapid pace of innovation that is helping Apple reinvent the phone and create the iPad category, delivering the best mobile experience available on any device,” said Scott Forstall, Apple's senior vice president of iOS Software, during WWDC 2012.

“We can’t wait for hundreds of millions of iOS users to experience the incredible new features in iOS 6 including the new Maps app, expanded Siri support, deep Facebook integration, Shared Photo Streams and the innovative new Passbook app.”

Currently available only to iOS Developer Program embers at developer.apple.com, iOS 6 will be available as a free software update this fall, when Apple plans to release the final version.

iOS 6 is compatible with iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, the new iPad, iPad 2 and iPod touch (fourth generation).
