Google Buys Frommer's Travel Guides to Bolster Zagat

Google has bought another company to add to its "local" group, Frommer's. In fact, Google will be merging Frommer's into Zagat, another high-profile acquisition in the same space. Like Zagat, Frommer is focused on reviews and guides, but unlike Zagat it relies on professional writers for its content. It also focuses more on travel guides, whereas Zagat was mostly used for restaurants.

It's the content that Google was after as it will bolster even more its growing repository of place reviews which the company has been amassing in order to fight off Yelp and the like.

"The Frommer’s team and the quality and scope of their content will be a great addition to the Zagat team. We can’t wait to start working with them on our goal to provide a review for every relevant place in the world," Google said. The price hasn't been disclosed, but it's likely to be rather small, by Google standards.
