Facebook has added smileys, hearts and other emoji elements to its Messenger application for iPhone and iPad aficionados.

New features in Facebook Messenger 1.9 iOS include the addition of smileys, hearts and other emoji to messages, the ability to click the person's name at the top of your conversation to view their Facebook Timeline, and improved "new message" sounds.

In addition to some minor bug fixes, Facebook Messenger 1.9 also lets you and your friends know how soon to expect a reply, thanks to the ability to see who's active.

Facebook Messenger supports English, Bokmål, Norwegian, Chinese, Czech, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Thai, and Turkish.

The app is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad and requires iOS 4.0 or later.
